Volkswagen Group to Implement North American Charging Standard by 2025

The Volkswagen Group has declared its plan to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in its upcoming electric vehicles (EVs) under the Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors brands, commencing in 2025. This move will enhance consumer convenience across North America.

In this endeavor, the group is actively seeking adapter technologies to enable current EV models, which are equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) charging port, to tap into the extensive Tesla Supercharger network. With over 15,000 Superchargers, this expansion will significantly broaden the charging possibilities for users. This progressive strategy is in line with the group's dedication to customer satisfaction and fostering eco-friendly transportation.

The incorporation of NACS into future models from Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout is in sync with the industry's trend towards unified charging standards. This initiative transcends mere hardware compatibility; it's a concerted effort to make the EV charging process more accessible and convenient for users.

This update is particularly crucial for Scout Motors. As their vehicles enter the market, their customers will benefit from immediate access to the extensive Tesla charging network, guaranteeing a reliable and efficient charging experience from the outset.

Electrify America and Electrify Canada, currently managing over 3,800 DC fast charging stations, have committed to this direction as well. They aim to integrate the NACS connector at their stations by 2025, while continuing to support the CCS standard. This reflects a growing trend in the industry towards versatile charging solutions that accommodate a diverse array of electric vehicles.

The Volkswagen Group's pledge goes beyond simply adopting a new standard. Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, stressed the importance of improving the charging experience through the adoption of open standards and interoperability, focusing on the customer. This sentiment is shared by Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, who underscored the significance of offering customers more options and an outstanding charging experience.

As we near 2025, more information about integrating the Tesla North American Charging Standard into specific vehicle models is expected to be released. This strategic move by the Volkswagen Group promises to provide convenience for customers and fostering the broader adoption of electric vehicles.
