2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 380: A Final Salute to the Manual Transmission

Volkswagen Canada has introduced the 2024 Golf GTI 380, marking a special year for the original “hot hatch”. This edition signifies the end of manual-transmission production in the Golf GTI lineage. Exclusively available for the North American market, the “380” in its name is a nod to its internal model code, reminiscent of the fourth-generation "337" special edition sold back in 2002.

This Golf GTI 380 is not just any GTI. From its 19-inch gloss black multi-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels to the summer performance tires, the GTI 380 exudes character. Accentuating its sporty appearance are a gloss black roof, mirror caps, and two distinct metallic exterior colours: Pomelo Yellow and Dolphin Gray, both of which are exclusive to the GTI 380. The classic GTI red exterior detailing juxtaposes beautifully with these new shades.

The internal styling elements have not been overlooked. In the “Autobahn” trim, the GTI 380 continues Volkswagen’s tradition with the classic Scalepaper Plaid cloth seats and honeycomb accents. The more premium "Performance" trim features Vienna leather seating surfaces as standard, but lovers of the traditional design can opt for the Scalepaper Plaid cloth upon request. Notably, the signature golf-ball inspired manual shift knob makes its appearance, much like it has across almost every GTI generation.

Under the hood, the GTI 380 mirrors the rest of the 2024 lineup. It's powered by a turbocharged EA888 2.0L four-cylinder engine, delivering 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Notably, this will be the final Golf GTI variant to be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Going forward, only the dual-clutch DSG transmission will be available in future GTIs.

It’s worth mentioning that the 2024 model year will also witness the conclusion of manual transmission production in other Volkswagen favourites - the Golf R and Jetta. However, the sporty Jetta GLI will retain its three-pedal setup beyond this model year.

Automotive enthusiasts eager to own this piece of manual transmission history can expect the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 380 in dealerships come early Fall, with a starting price tag of $36,895. Those who prefer the DSG-equipped GTI can still get it in three trims from $34,795.
